I can't believe I'm asking this, but the topic came up in a long hair forums I'm on -- once AGAIN, someoen pipes up with the "authoritative" announcement that there is wax in Mane and Tail conditioner. They seem to be hated only slightly less than Pantene.

I did a search on the word "mane" in the boards, but didn't find an existing link that I could post, or else I'd have just done that.

*sigh* Could you make some sort of statement about the actual ingredients of this stuff and what they are?

This is such a damned urban myth, and I can't believe people are so anxious to cling to it. It's like the alligators in the sewers, it just does not go away.

    They don't have a list of ingrediants - yet, I e-mailed them - however I found their actual website - http://www.straightarrowinc.com/index.html

I did find a list of the ingredients of their conditioner online, and the ONLY thing in there that can conceivably be called a "wax" is the emulsifier.

And after posting that I am of course on the outs and Part Of The Conspiracy.

Keep in mind that most of these people are licensed to drive. O_O

People are weird. However if you could get Snopes.com to debunk it - if they haven't already - they're more inclined to believe. Sadly, even more so then if our lovely Beauty Brains were to debunk it. (Just look at the blog about chemicals as an example. Now if that same thing had been on Snopes....)

     Edit: Got a reply -

    Jami,
We appreciate your interest in our products.

Researching before making statements is always a good policy. I'm sure you can find the pros as well as the cons for any subject on the web.

Personal choice is the bottom line when choosing a product.

Deciding which information is verifiable is sometimes difficult. Information can be slanted to the writer’s point of view in any number of ways.

For instance, we list emulsifying wax as an ingredient in our Mane 'n Tail Moisturizer-Texturizer Conditioner. Emulsifying wax is not a wax as most consumers would assume from the name.  Emulsifying wax is the ingredient that allows our other ingredients to blend properly; improving texture and consistency. So it is correct to say our product contains an ingredient with the word wax in the name but without researching the ingredient’s use, the consumer may be mislead by a writer’s omission of the complete explanation.

We understand that researching each ingredient would be tedious for a consumer.  That is why we follow the FDA’s regulations and recommendations list of approved ingredients for use in cosmetic products.

I hope this information is of some help to you.

We do not have a published ingredient list.

Thanks -- just as I thought. Sometimes humans drive me crazy, I swear it. Product choice literalyl has nothing at all to do with what works and what doesn't -- it's all about social tribe membership. Is it fashionable in your little group of friends to badmouth Evil Cones or not? That's literally it. Tribal affiliation.

I'mjust so sick and tired of CONES ARE EEEEVIHL! "Why?" They just are! How dare you question the basic postulate of our little social network!

Mineral oil is eevihl, too -- why? It's a petrochemical! Anything you can label with that word must be automatically eevihl!

There are so many people who quietly disappear from that site after they try to use the "all-natural" junk that doesn't freaking work and leave their hair destroyed and haylike, and they just go back to the Eevihl Cones and abandon the board after discovering that washing your hair in granola and organic bird poop doesn't actually work.

I mean, I'm a skeptic about a lot of things, and I don't like to use synthetics that haven't been tested and used for a long time; I'm not willing to be any company's beta tester. But it's not the same as chucking anything made by a megacorporation. (Like those hippie-crunchy "all-natural" things aren't made by megacorps ... )

*sigh* Sorry. Just felt a rant coming on, there.

Trust me, Janis, I know how you feel. Sometimes I just want to scream because people can be so ignorant/hypocritical.

Sometimes I just want to gag everyone in the world and make them shut up and listen to me as I tell them that everything they think is wrong.

Wax is even harder to remove than silicones! But it makes hair look thicker.

The thing is, Dreniva, there is no true wax in Mane & Tail. Just a "wax" that holds the ingreidants together. That's IT.

Not to mention that silicones are not hard to remove. Shampoo does the job perfectly.

Emulisfying wax will not be left on your hair when delivered from this conditioner.  It is in there simply to stabilize the formula.

Here's an ingredient listing for the curious.

It's difficult to convince people of one thing when they want to believe something else.

Some long haired / curly haired people have convinced themselves that silicones are awful and waxes are even worse.  There is really no level of proof that you could provide that would convince them otherwise.  It is a belief based on emotion not on rational thought.

When faced with someone who thinks like this, I always like to ask the question...is there any evidence that would convince you otherwise?

It's rarely effective but at least it gets them to stop and think for a moment.

I use it as a leave-in, i dont rinse it. It does remove after shampooing but it leaves a waxy feel in the hair, but only slight not that gunky. You must try to see it for yourself.

Whenever you leave a surfactant-containing product in your hair, it can feel like wax when all the water evaporates.  If you want to see for yourself just take a small amount of shampoo or conditioner or whatever and put it on a flat surface.  After sitting over night it will be a waxy little blob.  That is the hydrocarbons that feel waxy when there is no water around.

I think it's a belief based on tribal affiliation more than anything -- which is just a subset of emotion anyhow. People will band together and make tribes over ANYTHING, and being part of the hip, urban, all-organic crowd means affiliating oneself to their belief system.

Everything is ultimately religion in the end.
