I'm always iffy about these things because hair is "dead" once it comes out of your scalp. Shampoos like Panteen can make it look healthier, but that doesn't mean it is healthier. And I personally don't think there is a process that can make hair healthier once it's grown out of your scalp. My understanding - though if I'm wrong I appologise in advance - is that hair can really only be made healthier before it grows out. By eating the right foods and taking the right vitamins. (I know some of you believe that we get enough vitamins from the food you eat, and maybe in your cases you do. But in countries where so much of the food is convience food most of this food is so overly processed many of the vitamins are lacking. You're not going to get all your vitamins from Hamburger Helper. Course this is just what my family doctor tells me.)
Andrew Lessman whom sells vitamins via the Home Shopping Network has a supplement for hair, skin, & nails that my mom swears by. (If you click the supplement tab then click the button it'll bring up a PFD of the label with all the ingredients and such. Maybe the BBs would take a look and throw in their two cents on it.)
So in my opinion, which could be totally wrong, no shampoo - be is a $1 one or a $1,000 one - can really make hair healthier. Just give it the illusion of being healthier.
Wow. People seem to really like his vitamin supplement if you read the reviews. I see Biotin in its list of ingredients but it's never done wonders for me. I'd be curious for the Beauty Brains to dig a little deeper to tell us it's all that reviewers claim that it is, as well!
We'll have to take a look at those specific products. But from a scientific standpoint, there has never been ANY evidence that taking vitamin supplements will have a noticeable effect on the condition of your skin and hair (unless of course, you have a disease).
You are correct that hair that comes out of your head is already "dead" protein. Applying vitamins, minerals, etc. will not actually make hair more "healthy" or "nourished". Hair is no more alive than a shoe lace or a ball of yarn.
The reason hair looks shinier after one of these treatments is because the hair is straighter. Straighter hair has less curves, reflects light better, and thus looks shinier. Straightened hair also feels softer and smoother because the cuticles are flattened down. A rough feel is a result of uplifted cuticles.
The treatment doesn't actually re-build hair in the way that is implied (or directly claimed). The protein structure of a hair fiber is much more complicated than a simple straightening iron + hair treatment could ever reconstruct. It would be like trying to fix a hole in a blouse by putting it in a waffle iron with yarn and glue. You might cover the hole but you certainly haven't "rebuilt" the purse.
