Hair & Hair Products: Thick, long naturally curly hair - need a shampoo & conditioner

    I have tried so many shampoo & conditioners over the last 25+ years and have yet to find one that I can use and it work for more than a few washings. Ojon worked okay as long as I used their $55 stuff in the jar a full night before each washing. It does not last long with me because I have a ton of hair! It is too expensive to keep up that ritual, I just think there has to be a shampoo and conditioner out there that will not dry out my hair and at the same time not weigh it down. Please post a comment if you have any suggestions. THANK YOU :)

    Honestly, Pantene works wonders. I also have very thick, wavy, dark, coarse hair that tends to dryness. I wash once a week, shampoo the roots, and condition the ends.

    I don't find that I have too much buildup at all.

    Once a week with Pantene shampoo and conditioner. Maybe twice a week I use a fingernail-scraping of coconut oil or some silicone serum, but barely any at all.

    I also wear my hair up almost all the time since it is extremely long (mid-thigh).

    And found it interesting enough to perhaps give the products a try.  A friend of mine swears by them and I'm all for giving the "little guy" my support if possible.  Also, for a small company, the products weren't any more expensive than salon products which is sometimes a concern when you're dealing with a company that is manufacturing smaller quantities.

    Anyway, the website is worth a read and the products looked promising.  If I have anything astounding to report after I try the shampoo and conditioner, I'll pop back by and give a report.

    Thanks Janis - I tried Pantene years ago and it just did not work for me. I have to wash my hair more often than once a week too because it gets to feeling really bad. My hair is not near as long as yours but I do have a lot of it. Hair dresser and just people in general always comment on how much hair I have - I have enough to share with a couple of people and still have a full head of hair. Thanks for the suggestion, I may try it again just to see if maybe my hair has changed.......

    Scatter brain - thanks for the info - I plan on reading up on it and yes, please let me know how you like it once you have tried it.

    Note that companies change formulas all the time.  The Pantene you tried years ago is not likely the same thing they sell now.  So, you might consider going back to some of the things that you've already tried and rejected.  They may work for you now.

    angelwaves, I'd definitely give either Pantene or Tresemme a try -- mine is also ridiculously thick, and those two will always do nicely for it. Just make sure you rinse out well so nothing builds up.

    Also, coconut oil on the ends is extremely helpful. People would recommend oils to me all the time and tey always made my hair feel like dried-out hay. Coconut oil is the ONLY ONE that doesn't do that. It's lovely. Soaks right in.

    Also, if your hair is long enough to wear up, I'd definitely make a point of doing so. Straight hair with a tight cuticle can take a bit more punishment frmo daily wear and tear, but hair like ours can't. Curly or wavy hair tends to be dry and a bit "grabby." Leaving it down routinely can kill it -- especialyl when it's long enough to get rubbed between your back and your office chair, car seat, etc.

    BTW, the "active ingredient" in Ojon is palm nut oil, which is effectively the same as coconut oil in this instance, only TONS cheaper.

    Janis - Thanks I will try Pantene again and Tresemme. I did get the coconut oil and it is TONS cheaper and works the same as the ojon. Ojon also takes a LOT to rinse out - not quite as bad as the sap shampoo from Aveda though. I

    have tried some other oils too and they made my hair feel like straw - I also tried the coconut shampoo and conditioner that some swear by but it made my hair feel like straw and stuck together...........

    It is hard for me to wear my hair up..... it is fairly long - 1/2 down my back - dry - 3/4 down wet......... but it is also VERY HEAVY and putting it all up gives me headaches.......I can usually get away with putting some of it up if it is done where there is no pulling on my head. I keep a large clip thing in my truck though so when I ride with the windows down I can put my hair up and not have to deal with the knots! I never thought about the wear on it in the seats though..........

    You might find some things you can use there. Mine's up all the time, and the styles I mention there (especially the one at the way bottom of the styles page, the pinless braided bun) don't hurt or give me headaches at ALL.
