I have naturally curly hair and use a flat iron about twice a month to flatten out my curls. I have found that coating my hair with a tiny bit of almond oil before straightening it gets my hair really straight, but I want to know if the almond oil actually serves to protect my hair from heat damage. I read an answer to a question similar to mine that was not very helpful, something along the lines of: of course it's bad for your hair, oil + hot pan = fried food...somehow that is far from a convincing answer.

    Thanks for your input :)

Healthy hair cuticle contains up to 15% water by weight and a good dose of oil (lipids). High temperatures damage the lipids that keep the keratin layers smooth and make water evaporate. Coating your hair with extra oil reduces the heat damage. Even further, heat-protecting hair products sold at salons are often based on oil (and/or silicone). So continue with your regime
